An assessment of scenarios for future pig production using a One Health approach

One Health is an approach to achieve better health and well-being outcomes for people, farmed organisms their shared environment. The was used analyse the impacts on environment, people (including pigs) of three scenarios future pig production ascertain strengths weaknesses when compared with a Reference case reflecting today's production. were: Business as usual scenario (AsUsual), Sustainable Feed (SusFeed), Pigs bred feed efficiency animal welfare (SusFeedPig). In SusFeed, diets were without soybean meal but locally produced ingredients including yeast protein. pigs had access outdoor veranda, silage straw enrichment, selected using breeding goal. SusFeedPig, same in pasture during summer alternative goal focus overall improved welfare. AsUsual, fed current meal, no veranda silage, based goals. different assessed framework 13 success metrics. selection scoring indicators metrics may be subjective because they depend individual assessments that can variable. SusFeed performed than nine metrics, SusFeedPig eight AsUsual six. Sustainability all most preferable due reduced negative effects organisms.
